I use 10w 30 GTX High Milage oil. I was wondering if that is ok or should i use something else. Just want to know if there is something better to use or what seems to be the best?

Just change it every 3k and you're fine...

Just stay at the weight that your truck's manual says and have at it! I personally use 10-30 Valvoline Max Life or Mobil 5000.

Yeah, as long as it is staying in the crankcase you can do regular oil changes.

Is it still blowing out some or is it able to retain it now?

I'm losing about a litre every 600 km...was losing more but it seems to be holding it longer...

BTW, I run 20w50 right now at the suggestion of someone on here...seems to be better oil...but concerned about the winter coming on and too thick of an oil can cause starting issues...

I use Rotella 15-40 in everything that takes oils... everything!
with zero issues ever from it.
Had a chevy truck with 500,000 miles one it with no major work and no oil gunk build up in the valve covers. So I swear by it...and will probably always use it.

I agree with Rotella 15-40. GTX is good stuff and your engine will probably live a long time using it. 15-40 diesel will make it live longer. I'd even stick with 10-30 during cold weather months.

In summer, when it regularly gets above 70, I'd use 15-40. I'd also recommend switching to an oil that conforms to SJ-4 or CJ-4 spec (diesel oil). Gas oil has fewer detergents and has had almost all the zinc and sulfur removed for "emissions reasons". Diesel oil has much better cleaning capability and higher levels of sulfur which is better for your flat-tappet cam engine.

remember, I'm in Mississippi... I don't need different oil for winter. :D

So is the OP. But if someone from up north here who knows what a search function is ever signs up and stumbles across this thread, they will have the info.

Diesel oil in a gas engine? I was actually looking at some the other day and wondered what the differences were...now I know...thanks!

I have enough issues with the emission test as it is...does this add to it or would it make any impact on the emissions?

My truck is burning oil and I know that any additives seem to cling to the plugs...just cleared off number 2 plug the other day and it wasn't that long ago that I had to clean it...but I've been mixing and matching all kinds of additives...would like to dump it all and fill it with something that is heavy enough to withstand the impurities a bit longer...until I can get the motor rebuilt...and not have to pretend I'm a mad scientist making a secret formula for male pattern blandness...

i heard about that oil from my buddy right before i posted this thread. He told me the guy that told him to use it said it is not good for four bangers. He said it is too thick.

Mark88 my oil seems to be staying in the engine i just gave it a fresh oil change so i will keep monitoring it.

There is no such thing as the "best" oil. When it comes to brands, they are all more or less the same. High ZDDP oils are not necessary for roller cam engines, or even "low-performance" flat tappet engines with low spring pressures. Your engine will live basically forever on any oil up to current API standards. I wouldn't bother with diesel rated or high mileage oils, unless there is some problem you're trying to "fix" by using an alternative oil. Use any off the shelf 5w-30 and change it every 5k miles. (3k mile oil changes are a bit excessive and unnecessary) And there's no need to change viscosity at different seasons; multi-viscosity oils have made that obsolete. Use 5w-30 year round.

Good news, thanks for the update Dan.

I finally found an oil separator and installed it this morning. Just before my alternator went south on me...so I haven't had time to update or upload the images.

Will post the pics and the updated routing that I did. Now have both the valve cover and the crankcase blowing into a T connector that is going through the steel wool. The oil separator managed to squeeze out about a teaspoon full of oil from the return line and my engine smoked very little after putting it in line.

I posted an update on the oil catch can in the Submit Articles thread at the top...tried to edit the photos with fancy lines and pointers but realized the only tool I have for that is Paint...think I've got some other software somewhere but hopefully it is self explanitory...
