I have a 1990 2.3 ranger, and the oil pump went out on me (no pressure on gauge at all). Researching through alldata, apparently the motor needs to be pulled. Has anyone found a way around this? I searched on here, however i didn't find much, or maybe im looking in the wrong area. I looked into a 302 swap, but sounds like too much money/time to be worth it. Any insight or tips are appreciated thanks. :dunno:

the only way around it is jacking the engine up as far as possible and even then it's iffy

the oil pump didn't go out, it's the pickup screen that got filled up with goop, it's common, you could probably clean it out and put it back in and be fine for another 100K again...

pulling the engine sounds intimidating, but it's not all that bad, unplug the 3 connectors behind the intake on the drivers side, a couple vacuum lines, take off the exhaust at the manifold, take off the fan, fuel lines (disconnect them at the fuel filter, it's easier), 2 engine mount nuts, 3 starter bolts and the wire that goes to it and 6 bellhousing bolts and it's out. Once I got my engine loose friday night, got it out and the oil pan off saturday and got it all put back together including changing the clutch, dropped the engine back in sunday all while going to a local festival and going out to dinner at least once in there somewhere, and I was doing all the work myself (given I'd done it once before so it was a little easier). It is very doable in a weekend especially with a helper, the only special tool that is needed is an engine hoist and make sure you have a 15mm and 18mm wrench and a 15mm socket on hand (not common, but ford likes to use them). I would strongly suggest you replace the clutch while you are in there.

hm i guess ill give it a try...the weird thing is, it has no oil pressure, the gauge reads nothing, but i get no low oil light. im guessing it reads from the pan.

yes, the low oil light is an oil level sensor in the side of the oil pan, lets you know when you are 2 to 3 quarts low on oil, the oil gage is just a dummy gage, anything over 5psi and it reads normal, below that and it reads 0. in all honesty, if you have the cash, changing the oil pump would be a good idea at that point, I'm just a cheapskate at heart, it would suck to have to do all that again in a few thousand miles if I was wrong

the only thing I can think of that I forgot is the throttle cable, but that's only 2 bolts with 8mm heads, that and the air filter hose and coolant hoses.

if you aren't a stranger to wrenching, it's very doable... (the biggest part is getting over the intimidation of pulling the heart of your truck) and a tip, if you have power steering, take the pump off and lay it over on top of the steering box with the reservoir cap as high as you can get it (it'll spill). I would go to Napa and order a rubber oil pan gasket, they make sealing up the oil pan a LOT easier and are only around $30, the stock one is going to be toast, and as tempting as it is, just using silicone is more of a pain than it sounds... been there done that

No noises?I'd take time and hook a positve pressure gauge to it and check it for sure.Easy to do,right below the intake manifold in the back

no, it ticks extremely loud. there is plenty of noise coming from the motor, hence how i know there is no oil circulating. hooked up a pressure gauge and there is zero oil pressure regardless of rpm

while the engine is out, pull a main crank bearing cap or two to be sure it's all ok internally
