Oil pump fix?

Has anyone heard of changing the oil pump inside the pan without removing the engine or tranny?

You know what? It's easy to pull an engine. Unless you are the world's biggest wuss, you could pull your little V6 by hand. No, you can't swap an oil pump like you think. I have swapped crank bearings that way, though. You cut a box nail off and put the nail into the oiling hole. Rolling the crank, the nail slides the bearing around so you can get it. I've done that on a good many vehicles. If you suspect a bad pump, you should also look at the things in the system--bearings.

I read on another forum a guy just pulled the pan down and did all the work while it was laying on the crossmember

Maybe so, but how do you know the oil pump is bad? An oil pump doesn't fail like an alternator or waterpump fails. An oil pump is cooled and lubricated by oil. It has the job even Hugh Hefner longs for--there is no better job in the world than being an oil pump.

There is no pressure in the system? And when the dummy light came on is when the lifter tick started.

Did he say V6? on a 2wd 2.3l I was able to lift the engine up enough to get the pan off so I could replace a broken ring.

It's an 88 bronco 2.9 4wd auto

The uptake screen could just be really clogged? But still I'd had to drop the pan.

You don't need to pull the engine, just be prepared to work like a blind contortionist.

You can get the pump oil like that, but it is not fun or easy. I've done it on a 5.0 4wd F-150 before. If I was going to do it that way again would depend greatly on what I was gonna get paid for it.


If you have no oil pressure in a 2.9, I'd be looking at cam bearings, not the oil pump.

You dont pull the pistons out through the bottom of the cylinder and wiggle them past he crank? That saves so much time.



I have pulled the pan on a 92 2.3l 2wd without lifting the motor, BUT I had the trans out to do a clutch. That allowed me to drop the pan and slide it back and out.

Easy tiger I just didn't give details, pulling the pan was to get the rod unbolted to remove it, had the head off too, we just didn't have access to a hoist at the time
