Any idea what could cause this type of failure? Is this a weak point of the pump?

IT's possible tha there was a bunch of crud that got past the pickup screen and plugged one of the pump output AND the relief valve exhaust port and something had to give.

Though I'm moderatly suprised it wasn't the oil pump driveshaft.

I don't recall seeing that happen before.

Whanging it with the oil pan upon removal?

The broken edge looks VERY fresh.

Very unlikely. No excessive force was used in the pan removal. No marks on the outside of the missing piece either. Many marks on the inside however from contact with the pin on the end of the pressure relief valve though.

Here is a pic of the piece that broke off. The cracks and marks on the inside suggest to me that is where the offending force came from.

Lets see...your not completely aware of the past history of this truck..yes??

OK this is my twist to a possible reason.

I'd say the past owner lost the head & or gasket....in the winter, or late fall...got a crankcase full of water...let it sit for a time cause it wasn't "running well"...sever cold set in...got it running...for a quick trip ran worse so they parked it til spring...maybe changed hands a couple of times...somebody replaced the head and or gasket, got it running better, but not right, then sold it. as Paul Harvey would say, "And now you know the rest of the story"
