So I had to tear down my grandpa's truck today (not too hard as it's the same as mine ) due to a significant loss of oil pressure. I yanked the engine, removed the pan, and removed the sump/pump and sure enough the oil pickup was full of crap. I went ahead and ordered a new pickup and decided to take apart the oil pump just to make sure there was nothing in the assembly. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to which way the shaft for the pump was supposed to go in. Both sides of the shaft appear the same but I'm not sure if I have the retaining clip/washer doodad oriented correctly. in the picture, is the end facing up supposed to go into the block or the pump? Thanks.

did u get it figuered out?

I just stripped a block yesterday and forgot to look myself..I have a tendency to think it may not matter...but I'm doing another block tomorrow so i will know for sure...The Official Ford manual doesn't say...by looking at the thing it seems the clip may merely hold the shaft in the center of the bore till it hooks up both ends anyway..maybe that's it's purpose..I will make a decision by 2maro when i strip another block...( I've got five of these in my little shop) I was hoping some other "expert" stepped up to help both of us...

best wishes....

^ Yea I looked in both the Ford and Haynes manuals and they don't go into much detail. I looked at the wear characteristics on each end and found that one end (the end I'm holding) seemed to be worn the same height as it goes into the oil pump (I hope that makes sense) so I reassembled it as such. I haven't run the engine yet but by putting everything back together and priming the pump via the crank pulley instead of the intermediate shaft I was still able to get oil up into the pickup/pump. Anyway, definitely let me know what you find!

The end I put back in the pump is the one on the right:

The clip is for when you pull the Dist or the cam sensor, you don't pull the shaft out of the oil pump

^ Hmm that makes sense, I have a dual-plug 92' so I don't have a dist or a cam sensor, but I guess it's the same part for those models that do. Anyway, as soon as I get the truck back together I'll update this thread. Thanks for the help!

Came back to update, everything's working great.
