As part of the Taurus swap, I am swapping the oil pan (Taurus pan is dented anyway), and I thought I would be "smart" and buy a new Ranger oil pump....

Taking the oil pump off is very straight-forward, but how do you put in the shaft? On one end of the new shaft is a little clip - I assume that is suppose to go into the pump somehow...???

For $90, I am about to just put the pump from the Ranger engine in (shaft already attached)!!!

The Ford service manual does not touch on the shaft issue at all...

Help!

The clip is there so that the rod does not fall out with the engine upside down; that side goes towards the distributor hole.

Not trying to be difficult, but if the clip goes up into the engine, why do I not find any such clip in the shaft of the old Ranger pump or the old Taurus pump? On the old pumps, it seems that the shaft is firmly in the oil pump gear.

That's a question to ask Ford, I have no idea why they would do that. The clip also helps prevent the shaft pulling out from the distributor when it's taken out. It's a real bear to get it back into the pump. Google it if you don't believe me.

Per a saga with my oil pan, I ordered a Taurus pump, getting my money back on the new Ranger pump, and installed it this evening - Thanks PsychoPete for the insight.

Note: Interesting that the Ranger oil pump was $90, while the Taurus pump was only $56 - go figure!

im doing an 07 taurus engine into a 2000 ranger flex fuel. is there any difference in the oil pumps? should i buy a 07 taurus oil pump or 00 ranger oil pump?
