Does any one have a wiring diagram for an oil pressure safety switch. I have a 302 and an electric fuel pump. Am hooking up my stock gauges so if anyone could explain the wiring for me it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, A-

What exactly is this "oil pressure safety switch" supposed to do?

Safety switch is a fuel cut off device in the event the motor is not running and the car is still keyed on.

Wouldn't that result in an extended cranking condition while the oil pressure builds?

GM uses the oil pressure safety switch. What happens is the fuel pump is allowed to run and build up fuel pressure so the vehicle will run at start up. Once it builds oil pressure it runs like it should completeing the fuel circuit while the vehicle is running. If the oil sending unit should lose oil pressure while the vehicle is running it will break that circuit and kill the engine protecting it from destruction. It is a good thing to have and a great backup system for those who do not pay attention to the gages all the time.
Worked on an 87 Grand National that did the extended cranking and wasn't supposed to. After the car had run it would start like it was supposed to. I checked the oil sending unit which checked out good, then went to the relay wich also checked out good. Next went to the wiring at the relay and found a broken wire some where in the harness. Run a new wire from the fuse block and it has started right ever since.

Hmm. I can't say I've encountered those before.

Ok, I couldn't figure out how to wire the gauge into the oil pressure safety switch so I ended up getting a brass T and hooked up the pressure switch like the instructions showed (simple), and just put the oil pressure sensor on the other side of the T and wired to the stock gauge.
