Is it possible to drop an oil pan on a 95 4x4 ranger without removing the engine or pulling the trans? Or am I stuck doing one of these things? My pan is really rusty and leaky

unbolt motor mounts, unbolt fan shroud, buy one piece oil pan gasket, jack engine up by harmonic balancer as far as you can without pulling a hose or the like apart and thats about all you can do to get to it.

It's that easy? Looking at it I'm not sure if I'll get the engine high enough to clear the cradle and the pickup at the same time.

you dont clear the pick up, you never pull the oil pan out, you have to get a one piece gasket. after you get the old gasket off you feed the one piece under the pickup and get it positioned and start putting bolts in, not a fun job on the ground

I guess I'll give it a shot. Beats the hell out of pulling the whole motor.

He needs to replace the oil pan itself from the sounds of it.

You're stuck pulling the motor out to do that.

Not that I can see for sure. The pant is almost completely pulled off, and it leaks a good amount of oil. I haven't noticed any holes, so it could just be the gasket area leaking. I guess it would to be smart to go check.

EDIT: I checked, there are no holes, and it looks like the leak is mostly from the gasket area. I felt along the top of the pan and it felt like there wasn't much of the gasket left so that may have been the leak. Is there any way to make sure the problem isn't the rear main seal? It right at the back of the motor. If it's not, I'll probably try to throw the gasket on and see how long it lasts.

It's kinda hard to tell, but it looks like that isn't the case. The scatter shield doesn't have much oil on it. I'll just toss the gasket on and go from there. Thanks for the help

make sure to get a one piece rubber one with the metal inserts gonna cost ya a couple dollars more though

It looks like both the ones offered at advance/autozone don't have any metal inserts, as far as I can tell. Any other place you would recommend picking one up?

yeah I don't buy spit at either of those places, I go to carquest/ napa/ and a independent guy thats local thats been there for 35 yrs...

I can try the napa nearby, but I can almost guarantee they won't have it in stock. I was hoping to have this thing done tomorrow. I'll check it out though.
