Don't half-ass it.
Use a lot of rags and carb cleaner to get the oil off the metal mating surfaces after you have scraped the old gasket off.
RTV won't cut it.
Get a new gasket, cut it once at a 45* angle between two close bolt holes, and use gasket sealer or Form-a-gasket on all the surfaces. Use light coats. (By all the surfaces, I mean the bottom of the block, the pan itself and both sides of the gasket). Put the gasket on the bottom of the block and it'll stay in place while you put the pan back up and bolt it. Might want to let the Form-a-gasket set up a while so it's "tacky".
Lightly tighten the bolts and use red loc-tite on the first couple bolt threads. Use 1/4 drive ratchet and don't overtorque them (it'll leak). If you aren't going to torque them with a torque wrench, I suggest you get them all finger tight using a socket and extension (get them as tight as your fingers can) then add 1/6 to 1/3 turn from that point with the ratchet or wrench. Trust me, tighter is not better. You want snug without deforming the pan.
Yes, I realize what a PITA it'll be to do it this way and it'll probably take you a couple hours.
