I'm swapping a engine out of a 92 Explorer into a 94 Ranger. The salvage yard dropped the engine and broke the Oil pan. I have to swap the oil pan from the original engine.

First I ordered and bought a pan gasket for a 1994 from NAPA. Box says for 1994 thru 200X. So is there a diffrence in oil pan starting in 1994? Kind of worried now that I don't believe engine installed is original.

Oh and the Chilton's manual says something about oil using correct oil pan spacers??

So nobody has and Idea if the Chilton's manual is correct on the install?? I've taken the broken oil pan off the 92 and there is no shims. Haven't gotten the pan off 94 yet, but so far it looks identical.

The impression I got from reading the chilton's is that there is bolts that go thru the oil pan and into the tranny. On some there is a gap, and a spacer should fill the gap to reduce/eliminate stress cracks on the oil pan.

I just put a 94 Explorer engine in my 97 Explorer and replaced the oil pan gasket. I just took off the pan, cleaned the surfaces, and put it back on. I bolted it up tight and then later put the engine in and tightened the bell housing to pan bolts up. So far Ive drove it about 60-70 miles and it seems fine.

FYI: The 92 oil pan has a groove for the gasket. The 94 Pan is flat surface and gasket is tin with rubber seal bonded to it. Otherwise pans look identical.

I have rebuilt both my 94 4.0 explorer and 94 ranger and both had the groove for the rubber gasket.I would think the older pans would be flat gasket surface?

The new gasket which is labled for 1994 - 200X on the box from NAPA is flat as was the one I removed out of the 94. The 92 had the grove.

I have a '94 Ranger and I know the motor is original & I know there's no grove in the oil pan. It uses a flat gasket.

The 94 I put in mine has the flat pan and gasket. I was worried about it before i took it apart because I already had bought it for a 94 but when I took it off to replace the gasket it was the flat one.
