So here's the dilemma. My truck finally started dripping oil on the ground. Its dripping near where the engine bolts to the transmission. What clues should I be looking for to find the location of this leak? I really don't want to pull the transmission to replace the rear main seal and find out that the leak is from somewhere else.

On the other hand, I really want to re-gasket the entire engine. Can I do that with the engine in the truck? If that's so, I just may do that instead of rebuilding.

I'd take it to a car wash and get rid of all the oil and goop, spend as much time as you need to get it clean then watch for leaks. You could also add some fluorescent dye to the oil and use a black light to find your leaks.
Good luck,

Richard

Do they sell the dye separate at parts stores? The shop I work at has a blacklight for A/C dye, so I'm covered there.

I've bought dye for rad fluid at Autovalue [Canada]. I think they had for oil too.

I found a couple of leaks. Found that my valve cover is leaking profusely. But the other one has me very confused. I saw the UV dye I put in the oil on the heater hose that goes from the water pump to the heater core. I for the life of me could not find the source of the leak. Anybody have an idea of where this oil could be coming from? :icon_confused:

Dude my truck has same problem. Rear main seal. Ive had my engine pulled twice to fix it but NAPA couldn't do it. Gave me a bs excuse that something in the tranny was knicking the seal. but i got a free clutch out of it :)

update

By now im sure you have solved your problem but i just had my tranny rebuilt and while they were in there had them replace the rear main. Truck still leaks oil and from the exact place yours does. Since my vavle covers leak like crazy now and it seems to do it more when parked at a slant, i'm assuming it is the gaskets. My guess is it just runs down the engine and gets blown over other components from moving parts and such, goodluck! hope you figured out your leak!:icon_thumby:
