what would cause a sudden and excessive oil leak at the front oil pan gasket in a 2000 ford 3 liter v-6 ranger, could the wrong filter or wrong oil or too much oil have caused this ?

No. You have a bad gasket or seal, or it's possible the oil pan has a hole rusted through.

I bet its a bad gasket or seal. Oil filter type don't mean anything, and the amount of oil shouldn't make it leak. However u should never over fill, the only way oil could cause the issue is if gasket has been replaced by standard permatex, and u run syn oil, there is a chemical in syn oil that will eat through standard permatex, if u replace gaskets with permatex, and run syn oil u must use permatex ultra.
