I just bought another ranger last night. Its a 92 4x4 with a 2.9. For 450 bucks. I was going to a small town near by knoxville iowa to pickup a new rear bumper. I smelled oil and pulled into a gas station. I found the whole under side of the truck covered in oil and none on the dipstick. I bought 2 qts and dumped it in engine. And called a friend with a car trailer. When i got home i looked under it with a light and seen on the side of the block half way up the bell housing was very clean from oil running down it so i took the intake off. There was not sealer on the front or back of the intake will this cause it to leak out all over or is it the rear main seal? The clutch dont looked covered in oil like its the rear main seal and there was oil all over by the dist. on the backside of the intake. The intake gasket was replaced with a fel pro not sure how long ago but looked fresh.

I'm wondering if maybe it's the rear main itself or maybe even somehow the distributor O-Ring. I think you might want to try to fill it with oil, run it and just look at it for a bit.

Just replaced the intake manifold gasket myself. If there was no RTV sealant on front or back of the gasket, that could very well be the cause of your leak. How does it look around the valve covers and oil pan?

I replaced the intake gaskets because there was no sealer at the ends of the intake. It still has a very small oil leak coming from the pan or rear seal. I'm hoping i can tackle that next weekend.
