i recently pulled the 2.9 from my broncoII to install it a 88 ranger in great shape, the install went without a hitch except the motor started smoking like a freight train. I pulled the 2.9 back out and in doing so when i cut the headpipe I saw oil had been enter it through the head any explanation for this maybe valve stem seals or what?

What ...pray-tell is or..are you refferrring to as the "headpipe"???

I think he is asking about the Y pipe between the exhaust manifold and cat converter. Maybe oil is leaking out from the valve covers down to the exhaust manifold?
