Oil Filters

Here's the most disturbing part. The anti-drain back valve has actually folded over, allowing the oil to completely bypass the filter element. The Fram's thin valve and poor design is the most likely cause. Unlike most of the other filters, there is not a metal end cap to support the valve. Another thing to note is that the valve was rock hard, obviously affected by the dirty oil. This suggest that a Silicone ADBV is a better idea.

The above is interesting. However as the person that did the study states clearly afterwards? It's possible the filter was in service for far to long.

Everyone is going to use exactly what they want in the end. And everyone is going to be right in their own mind. I've not been a fan of Fram filters due to my own personal first hand exp. Heck, every filter is supposed to be made per specs and tested to meet OEM standards. But one has to wonder if the Fram filter we used on our probe met those standards? Then why did Ford issue TSB's suggesting to reduce valve noise to return to the motorcraft filter? Clearly there was not any issues with the engine, other then the fact it just didn't care for the Frams? (it had a fram, and noisy HLA's...we changed the oil with another Fram 4 months later...still noisy. Did some research on forums and Fords own advice? Went with a slightly more expensive filter (napa gold line) and the HLA noise ceased, and the oil pressure did have a slight increase). Don't bother with the "engine" needing repair crap! What it needed? Just a different oil filter. Something with the Frams design just didn't work well with that engine. (and judging by the huge amount of people on the probe forums that have had the same issue with Fram on a 2.2 turbo 4 cyc?...and all their noisy "HLA's" quieted right down after just a filter change?

That's just my opinion. And I've spent many years turning a wrench for a living. I've always recommended using high quality parts. Good oil...OEM style filters when ever possible, etc..

If you're happy with your Fram? Then good for you! I'd just rather spend a few extra dollars and get one that has better internal construction.

(and it does not take a rocket scientist to look at the internal construction of a new filter---and see which one is built better)
