I need to relocate the oil filter on my 4.6 P71 for the swap into my 2001 Ranger. However this engine has an oil cooler that taps off oil filter plate which attaches to the engine block, the lower coolant neck is also an integral
part of this mounting plate. I've never seen an engine that does not have an oil cooler, do these engines have seperate mounting plates.? One for the oil filter and one for the coolant neck? I need to move the filter but maintain the lower coolant connection. I have attached a photo of the mounting plate from this engine. Thanks in advance.

The non PI 4.6's don't have an oil cooler. Just the oil filter mount like all other Ford motors

My brother's '97 F-150 with the non-PI 4.6 has what Ford calls an oil cooler, amounts to what I consider an oil relocation kit. Two fittings and two hoses that are a sealed unit (you can't replace the hoses or anything) one fitting goes on the block and the other mounts up behind the bumper and the filter goes on it.

I dunno how it varies from a normal setup, I didn't crawl under my '02 with a 5.4 to compare. All I know was that he was making noise about replacing it because of a leaky hose.

My 95 E150's 351W had one too, but it was sandwiched between the block and FL-1A filter and was cooled thru the lower radiator hose, same as that 4.6 filter adapter above. I pulled a 4.6 from a 90's police car years ago, but don't recall it having a setup siuch as that, matter of fact, it had a heat exchanger (water to oil) like the older cop cars had with the oil lines plumbed to it.

The F-150's isn't really a cooler IMO, it is a basically just moves the filter up behind the bumper.

It does the same exact thing as the relocation kit in my truck but the lines and fittings are made together, Ford calls it an oil cooler though.

Dunno what that kind of curve on the lines will get you for room, and it would take your factory cooler out of the picture but it is an idea. Most common in 97-98 4.6 trucks.

The setup in your pic isn't a cooler and says such. Look at the top of the illustration, it says "w/o cooler" The one in my E150 was but it was a coolant to oil, instead of air to oil. The big diesels use the same type of cooler and have for decades.

This is definetly an oil cooler, the heat exchanger goes in line with the lower rad. hose, but my question still goes unanswered, what does a standard oil filter mount look like and is it separate from the coolant outlet. I need to replace this unit for more frame room, really don't care if I lose the cooler, but I might be able to plumb it into the relocation lines?
Thanks

May have answered my own question? I found this photo on another site, my question , is this what the standard oil filter setup looks like on most 4.6's.
Thanks

It said cooler on the box. :dntknw:

My 5.4 mounts to something about where the block adaptor is on that setup, to be quite honest it is pretty hard to see. It sets perfectly horizontal right above front differential.

I don't have time to check right now, but they have a lot of pictures on here:

Thanks for posting this. I've looked all over the damn Al Gore invented internet trying to find what is involved in the factory cooler/relocation set-up. Low and behold, I find it right here on TRS.

This set up really looks like more trouble than it's worth to install. They aren't cheap either if you have to buy everything. My F150 has the filter right above the front differential, and is a big PITA. But I think for now it's staying there - at least until I change the oil a few more times.

The "non P71" oil filter adaptors look exactly like yours just without the lines or the boss for them.

I got a non cooler one for mine at the u pull it place for like $10 and plan on going with a remote setup or may just go with the ford remote setup in the diagram above.......

Thanks for the input, I picked up a non P71 filter adapter at the local JY and added a remote filter kit to it and all fit well.
