Oil changes are easy right guys? Well apparently not for the last guy that owned my donor engine! He took sludge to a new level.

If you want to see more of this engine and it's tear down / rebuild / install into my B2, click here.

i think my donor 5.0 was worse....

That is just nasty. I'd hate to see the rest of the vehicle.

wish i took pics of some of the motors i have pulled apart....some nasty stuff in there...

geeeezzzzzzzzz now that was some nasty nasty stuff in there. I think i would find the guy and hit him with a hammer

You think that's bad? When I bought my first Mustang II, it had a 302 that must have been original, or at least untouched for a long time. It had about 1" of that shit lining the entire bottom of the oil pan. After I scraped it all out and put the pan back on, it held over a liter of oil more than previously.

Wow, *THAT* is nasty brendank69, I would imagine a bunch of you guys have some horror stories about grossness like this, but it still surprised/frustrated me when I found it. We run 15 pieces of heavy equipment on our farm and we put serious effort into maintaining our fleet, and regular vehicles too. So when I found this it was the worst I'd seen (in real life anyways)

The engine is getting sprayed down with degreaser, pressure washed with 200 degF water, and then wiped down and lightly oiled, tomorrow I hope.

Does anybody have any exp with hypereutectic pistons? I'm considering them for the rebuild.

Worst I've seen was my brother's truck. He called me and said when he started the motor there was no oil pressure, then something would go -bang- and the oil light would go out and it would be fine and would I look at it because it's been that way for 2 months.

I cut the oil filter in half with a bandsaw and it was packed solid with black tar. Sort of makes you wish that instead of the relieve valve it had a fist that came out of the dash.

Sloth is a deadly sin.

If I took apart an engine and found THAT I'd stop, load the engine into the back of my truck take it to the scrap yard, then drive to the junkyard and get another engine...

But then again I do that instead of rebuilding a common engine anyway.

It's FAR easier (and cheaper) to "recycle" one than rebuild one.

Unless of course it's something exotic.

a 2.9/4.0 isn't a 427 side oiler.

i pulled apart a saturn ecotec2.2 in my auto class in school
thr #2 exaust valve was broken off the strn and inside the piston (which was cracked)
i should have worked on the 4.0 out of an explorer we have

I've seen the horror stories as well. In fact, a worker in the same store that I work. I nag her until she gets oil changed every 5months. Why?. Last time she went 7K miles over the 5k mile mark, thats 12K miles on the same oil. And she did it again this last Saturday. Luckily, I make sure she is running Mobil 1 and nothing else. It maybe pure black, but its not varnishing or sludging.

As for me. I'm paranoid about it. Every 5k miles within 25miles of that mark, I change my oil. As of now, I use Royal Purple. Or Mobil 1 if out of RP, but always a high quality sythenic motor oil.
