Oil changes are easy right?

I have torn down some eingines that look pretty bad. But I also work on alot of stuff that sits for years. I had a wisconsin TF two cylinder that had half a gallon of water underneath the oil...that was fun...ran good after new poured bearings and new rings. I also had an Onan JC that had 4 inches of rusty sludge in the pan instead of oil...and the owner wondered why it was stuck.

Then there are the engines that are chunks of rust....If i ever get the chance I'll post up the before pics of My McCormick-Deering M. That crankcase was sludgy...but then again, everything except the piston pin is lubricated with grease. It has a LH thread greaser on the end of the crank and a drilled crankshaft. Pretty impressive for a engine designed for farm use in the 1910's.

Heh, we've got one customer who seems to be religious about not changing oil--they just top it off. Cummins 10 liter, one long valve cover, packed solid with sludge. I almost blew my kidney out of my ass trying to pull it loose. Scraped it all out and weighed it, 65+ lbs of crap. It was in the shop for a set of injectors because they didn't change their water separator and blew some tips off. We tried to sell them a PM at that point, but they said they'd do it themselves.

A month later it was back with a blown turbo. They never changed the oil. The filter went into bypass and some of that crud lodged in the turbo and cut the shaft in two. That time I didn't ask--I just changed the oil. Normally needs 36 quarts, took only 24 quarts to "fill."

Both bills weighed in around $3,000 each, just from poor (or no) PM. Smart people. They have since begun changing oil.

I have some relitives that go years and not change there oil. I already changed one engine out in there old pickup, so i now maintain it, but they will take a trip and never raise the hood, never had a break down. I just don't understand it.

:fie: I still change my oil every 3000-4000 miles. I don't care if it's excessive, I'd rather be on the safe side and do it more often. My family doesn't drive too much anyway, and 3000 miles usually turns out to be about every 6 months.

I always wondered how much oil those big engines took. It makes the 5.9,7.3,6.0 look like small fry now. At least I never have to change any vehicles oil bigger than a shuttle bus. Mostly just the Mom's mini vans and Civics.

But ya folks, for the love of it already. It doesn't kill you to take it to a shop and just have it changed with their bulk oil or your perference.

I just changed oil in our FreightLiner this afternoon, it has a 425 Cat engine and The used oil filled a 5 gallon pail. My dad scolded me for only having one pail under the truck instead of 2! The filter alone holds as much as my sisters Chevy car.
