I'm new to all this so I'll just put this here......what would I need to do to swap a sohc 4.0 in place of my ohv in my 94 ranger 5spd 4wd?? Any help would be appreciated thanks
You could swap all the wiring for the SOHC and convert it to OBDII. I do recall reading someone did it in an exploder, doesn't help much as a bunch of people probably have. Only thing to watch out for is the timing chains in that motor! Good luck.
It is the timing chain guides that can be a problem. Any 4.0 SOHC before 2002 have the most potential for problems in that area. Each year after that increases the odds of not having a problem.
The best thing would be to replace the timing chain guides before installing the engine. The new timing chain guides have been updated and have much better durability. It could be argued to change the timing chains also at that time but that typically requires special tools that are expensive. It would be a good idea to change the timing chain tensioners with the guides though. That all depends on how many miles are on the engine and what year it is.
After doing my homework I don't think that it's really something I want to do my whole thought process was fuel mileage but from what I can find the gains I would see aren't worth all the work I think I'll be saving for some kind of diesel swap
