Hey everyone,

I've been working on installing my OHC and I'm SO CLOSE to being finished.

This is my first ever time doing any kind of electrical work, or any significant modification to a vehicle.. so I'm a total noob.

So far I've got the bracket in and the wires run through the headliner.. I'm just having a ton of trouble with a couple wires.

I still need to hook up my Orange/Green dimmer, and my Grey/Black speed sensor.

Old Ranger's are supposed to have the the grey/black go to their GEM behind the dash, and newer ones say to hook it into the "Smart Junction Box Brown". Is the SMJ the one under the glove compartment? I also saw this posted somewhere:

For 2007~2008, the Ranger got the 170-pin PCM and new harnesses. The new VSS color is violet/orange and it is under the hood between the PCM and the speed control servo.

I'm a little confused by this sentence. I'm assuming VSS means Vehicle Speed Sensor.. which is the PCM and Speed Control Servo?

The gray/black wire goes from PCM pin 68 through the firewall to the back of the instrument cluster for the speedometer. You could tap it right at the PCM or behind the cluster or you could dig around in the large wire bundle where the engine compartment wires come through the firewall to the dash harness.

Does this mean I can find the violet/orange the comes out right by the pedals? Does this mean I should just disregard the Junction box?

I've also seen people say that the dimmer is rendered moot by 2007 Rangers, so I shouldn't even bother with it.

Sorry for this long-winded post.. I'm just at a point where the more I search the more confused I'm becoming. This is supposed to be a very short job but because it's my first time doing anything like this it's taken me VERY long to get to this point.

If anyone could help me identify where I need to be through these pictures I took I would very much appreciate it... Thank you!

The SJB (Smart Junction Box) is the item in your last picture. It is a fuse block and module all in one.

VSS is vehicle speed sensor. The PCM is the unit under the hood, center of the firewall, three plugs in it. To find the speed control servo find the throttle body. It has two cables on it, one goes to the firewall (and then to the gas pedal), one runs back to a box under the hood. That box is the servo.

You can find the VSS wire anywhere and tap into it. By the cluster is probably the most convenient.

As for the dimmer, I would not worry about it at all. I usually leave dimmers unhooked when I install stuff because I like my displays as bright as they can be.

Thank you so much for this explanation.. very helpful. I was at a point where the more I searched the more confused I was getting! I'll have another go at this today and post pics when all's said and done!
