I am installing an OHC in my 86 ranger and I have a small issue. The VSS wire . I have no connection on the GEM. The wiring diagram I have for the 86 ranger shows a grey with black stripe wire for the engine knock sensor for the 2.3 engine. Can I hook this wire someplace else? OR is there another color wire. My diagram doesnt even show a VSS on the GEM. Help Thanks :icon_confused:

An OHC what ? 4.0 SOHC ? I installed one with a 5R55E in my 87 and I have no VSS either. The trans does up shift but not what I'd say as being "right". Basically shifts at fixed times regardless of how much throttle you are giving it. Since my truck is mostly off road only, I haven't really been looking for a solution .

My engine came from a 2001 Explorer . That vehicle's VSS comes from the ABS module and sends the VSS on a single wire directly to the PCM. My best thought so far is to wire in a ABS module with power and ground with a connection to the rear wheel speed sensor.

Yeah, we are gonna need more info. Year and type of the donor engine and what they came out of for starters. What they are going into also. Your 86 shouldn't have a GEM, unless you put one in it.

Or are you putting in an overhead console? If so, why are you doing anything with wires anywhere near the knock sensor.

Hes talking Over Head Console.

And your 86 doesn't have a GEM period. They didn't appear until 95/96.

Thats what it sounds like.

The Explorer O.H.C. hooks into the VSS.

That still doesn't explain why he is fussing with the knock sensor. He shouldn't need to be anywhere close to it.

I'm not gonna comment on that one. Thats all on him!! I'd like to know too.

Why dont you guys learn to read! All I said was the Black/grey wire on my wiring diagram shows it goes to the Knock sensor for the 2.3 engine. I never said I was hooking up anything to it. I have a 2.9 engine. I was merely trying to find the VSS. It was not shown on the wiring diagram. But I did find it. It is mounted on the transmission attached to the speedometer cable as it goes into the transmission. Take a couple of reading comprehension classes

you dont have to hook it up... you should be ok with out it.. it just helps with temp spikes while your truck is sitting their ... this way it wont pick up the engine heat.
