OH NO HO NO oil pressure

There are oil systems that have oil bypasses built in (in some cases the oil filter itself) to where if there is a certain amount of restriction it bypasses to keep oil flowing through the engine instead of the filter, even though it is not filtered, contaminated oil is better for an engine than no oil. Check your lines and make sure you have them correctly run. Check the oil pump as well with a mechanical gauge and make sure it is operating correctly, then go from there

I have seen new engines run and drive down the road with no oil flow and still be ok and thats becuse the assembly lube that was used protected the engine from major damage.

No way,,, rings, pistons and cylinder bore surface will be destroyed. Assembly lube on bearings might help them last for a short time.

Small block Fords have them built into the oil pump and bleed off into the pump itself.

I do agree with this but even at that the filter would some oil in it still.

Well,,, when I was a teen, many many years ago, I watched a dumb ass drain his oil,,, catch pan leaked,,, oil everywhere,,, so the dumb ass fires it up,,, puts it in reverse,,, pulls back 20 feet to clear the mess and before he had time to put it in park the motor locked up completely.

Well got back to the Engine today. Took out the distributor, popped driver side valve cover and put in old distributor. Ran it counter clock wise with drill. No oil to filter, no oil to #5 valves. There was some oil under the valve cover. Some where in the intial run the oil pump failed. Promised my wife I would clean the garage. Since every thing "works" I can get rid of my old parts etc and streamline what I need. This week end it is garage cleaning time. Then pull engine. Not looking forward to it but hopefully the engine isn't fried completley!

When the oil pan was installed did anyone check the clearence between the pick up and the pan?

Hate to hear that. I bought a set of SunPro mechanical oil and temp gauges that I hook up temporary to make sure this doesn't happen. But hindsight is better than foresight. Best $30 investment you can make.

I didn't check the clearance of the oil pump as I remember events 3 years ago. I noted in a video I watched (after this malfunction) that the pick up tube was welded on after clearance was checked. There was a bracket that hooked to a protruding main cap bolt as I remember, or perhaps a bolt hole the bracket hooked up to. I figured it was a "pre set deal " designed for this application. Ignorance isn't bliss nor is second guessing! Thank you for the sympathy. I need to drive on and will update once I figure it out!

I will use a mechanical oil pressure gauge next time and be more careful with hook up! Life is a learning process and I sure am living!

The engine builder should have installed the rod with a keeper to prevent it from falling out.
