Odometer not reading all the time!?!?

I have a 2000 V6 3.0L Ranger. I changed the gauge cluster in it because i wanted one with a tach on it and ever since then my odometer will only work when it feels like it...it will read 20 miles and sometimes it will read 400 miles without stopping. And when it stops it could be as much as a full tank as gas or sometimes a few miles but its not consistent. But everything else on the cluster works fine.

Anyone know what the problem may be here?
Feel free to ask any questions!

Thanks,
Clint

The odometer should be based off the speedo cable, are you having issues with your speedometer? If you can look around the odometer and see if any gears are broken/siezed up.

Either way, its a bad cluster. If its digital then you have a weak solder and need a new cluster. If its the old analog style you have a bad gear or spring and need a new speedo head, which usually only come with a cluster.

So basically, unfortunately, you need a new cluster.

The only other thing you can try is putting your old one back in for a bit. If it still does it, look at the dash harness, otherwise, you need a cluster.

im actually using my old odometer and speedometer (besides i dont have to screw with changing my miles on it) part of my original cluster beacuse i tried 2 different complete clusters already and still the same problem.
mine is the old style that rolls and my speedometer always works fine.

bad gear in the speedo head then.

i hope its that easy but thats 3 different clusters that do the same thing

Wait, now I'm a bit confused (my reading comprehension is low sometimes). Correct me if I am wrong here.

You have tried 2 complete clusters, speedo head and all, and it still does this. That amounts to roughly 3 speedo heads and 3 different odometers and all do the same thing, even though the speedometer continues to function correctly.

Correct?

That doesn't make much sense to me since they are mechanical units driven by a cable.

Does your truck by chance have ABS? The ABS equipped trucks run the odometer off the rear axle speed sensor. Your sensor may be going bad.

Correct, I tried 2 complete clusters and both had the same problem so then i put my old spedo and odometer setup in one of the clusters with the tach and tried that and still the same problem and everything works fine except the odo sometimes.

Im goin to the junkyard tomorrow and getting another cluster for shits and giggles.

Save your money. At this point I'm fairly certain it's not the cluster or the head. Two used parts with the same issue is possible. Three with the same is unlikely. The combos you have tried is statistically negligible.

I'd guess there is an issue with your rear wheel speed sensor.

ok but i must have created the problem because there wasnt one before i changed the cluster and still my speedometer works so i dont think it could be that
