I'm gearing up for an EFI 5.0 swap this summer and i'm just trying to hammered down my shopping list. Anyone with experience, feel free to add or correct me :icon_thumby:

96-97 Explorer 5.0
Harness from same
Any SBF T5 (?)
Convertible mid/late 80s 5.0 mustang mounts
90* oil filter relocation kit
rear/dual sump pan

Going to also do a cheap coil/leaf lift for 2" all around for clearance/ride quality. Shouldn't be a major issue since i'm 2wd anyway?

What are my choices for computers? I believe we don't have a separate computer for the trans and i need to stay kosher for an OBDII vehicle in NY.

Let me know what dumb assed stuff i've forgotten :icon_rofl:

Your list looks pretty good. Just be prepared for a lot of wiring, it's not a plug & play into a '97' Ranger.
Dave

Any idea what computer to use though? I'm sure i could use the explorer's computer, but the code it'll throw from the slushbox not existing will keep me from passing NY's "We wish we were California!" inspection...

:beer:get it reflashed to not throw the codes. any tuner with an SCT programer or diablosport should be able to get you a good hand held to keep things in order for inspection

No problem of getting around not having an auto and throwing codes, easy to program out. You're kind of stuck with the '96-97' computer and a bunch of wiring. Best get the wiring diagrams from Helms for both and do some comparing. The Explorer's computer has 104 pins, Ranger has guessing around 94?
Dave

Good to hear. I'll try and pickup a 96-97 harness/computer and duplicate of my own harness ahead of time to try and save some frustration when i'm in the driveway screaming this summer ;)

If you have a choice in harnesses, grab a '98', eliminates some splices at the AC (not big deal). I know of some other up your way that have done the swap, just not with your combonation. The other thing is that those years of Explorers are going to have the very crappy tube type exhaust manifolds. Actual opening is barely bigger that your thumb. The cast iron ones are better but the best are the Torque Monster headers but they run about $750. Got pictures of them all if and when you get around to that stage.

I won't be running AC or PS. The truck didn't come with either and i don't miss them. PATS would just be more work too.

That's why to stay with the '97 or 96" computer, Explorer didn't have it then. You're going to have to come up with some AC and PS delete pulleys if still planning on the Explorer front dress, maybe something from a late Mustang would work (spacing is probably wrong).
Dave

I assume all explorers came with PS and most with A/C? I'd assume i could just rip the lines and plug them if i can't find delete pulleys or just the right size belt to run without them at all.

Just a heads up, something else to plan on. (Think all Fords come with AC and PS anymore)..The good news is that you are planning ahead.
