Hey my 03 ranger xls O/D light just started flashing and now it wont really shift. I will drive down the road and all it will do is hit 6000 and then start jumping but wont shift. whats wrong with it?

First off since the OD light is flashing that means there are codes in the computer...you are going to have to get the codes pulled before anyone can help you.It could be as simple as a bad speed sensor(VSS) or it could be a blowed part inside the tranny ..but since that tranny is controlled by computer you need to get the codes read.

ok I'll get them pulled but since it won't shift out of first is there anyway I can just get it to shift?

not really, its all computer controlled

Its been said already, pull the codes. Like said before it could be one part or whole damn thing. There is a good side and bad side to the computer running the show, on the good side it gives you the info needed to fix it, on the bad side if its messed up your boned:)

Yeah, put a manual trans in it.

ok i know i need to pull the codes but any guesses on what it might be?

You transmission went on vacation. It will be back 2 days after Christmas.

ya not doin that. If my trans needs to be rebuilt how much would that run?

3 grand ish. Depends on where you live and who does the work. Call around and ask for estimates.

However, i highly doubt you will need a total rebuild. My guess would be that worst case, you need a new valve body. That is more like $300 in parts.

3 Grand...i wish i could get that to rebuild one..i get around 1500 bucks to pull one and rebuild it and i have never had to put a new valve body in one.

Just had this happen to mine last month. Had to have an overhaul done. Took it to a local shop that was recommended by my mechanic. Total cost was $1800. From what I understand, a lot of tranny mechanical problems are not easily diagnosed with the tranny in the truck. If your codes are telling you its mechanical, you are looking at having to get it removed and diagnosed which is going to cost you.

That's the going rate in my area. But like I said earlier, prices vary by region.

I have seen a few failed valve bodies, but they are not the most common thing in the world. The only reason I'm leaning that way is that it ONLY has 1st gear.

GET THE CODES!!!!!!! It could be as simple as a sensor or as bad as a reman trans.
