I have had my 2wd Ranger transmission rebuilt now but the o/d light keeps coming on and flashing. Before the rebuild the motor seemed to run at 2100rpm, now more, 2500rpm. Everything is tighter, why should the rpm be higher and most of all what is causing the o/d light to come on. The shop already took it back 2 times but apparently, they haven't found the problem.
I thought it was heatload, and running the AC that caused it at first but today just open freeway and it comes on. The shop found a loose wiring harness connector on the differential for speed sensor, now that has been replaced but still o/d light on intermittently. killing the car and restarting it will reset the light, but it usually comes back in a few more miles. I just want it to work fairly smoothly and no back talk from the transmission.

Unfortunately, the flashing overdrive light = "replace transmission soon". You might have to bite the bullet and look at a remanufactured transmission to replace the one you have. I hope I'm wrong and others here can give you better guidance.

the increased rpms are because the transmission is not in overdrive.
the flashing OD light is the computer saying there is something wrong and is staying out of overdrive.
read your warranty and keep talking to the shop.

intermittent problems are the worst kind.
something broke is an easy fix, something that doesn't stay broke can be a challenge.
