ny state window tint ticket.. need you 2 cents

ive been in this boat before... i had 5% on ALL my windows.. Def ILLEGAL... had it for 3 years... the Legal limit is 70% of light through your window.. so the box that says 35% tint that you usually see at your local parts store is technically illegal by 5%. even tho you paid good money for it the shop more than likely has a Small print on their paper work stating their are not responsible for any tickets you may get.. id scrap it off an either get a lighter tint or dont tint it at all.

my cousin is a corrections officer in NY state and the tint law according to him is that any tint other than factory is illegal. He got a tint ticket and barely got enough strings pulled to get out of it and he works for them...

So can they tell by the VIN or specs that you got Factory tint? I don't understand how he got a tint ticket, if it was factory he is innocent. What "evidence" did the Ticket issuer have on him, how did he know it was not factory tint?:icon_confused:

Maybe Former Cop Jim Oaks can explain to us this subject for clarification.

hahaha, we tinted the chevy windows... that didn't last long. i was talking to a cop buddy of mine, and he was like- that has to come off, or you're gonna get a ticket..

not to mention the first time if drove it at night i refused to leave it on. now it looked awesome. stayed a lot cooler in the truck.. but it had to go..

i had 2.5% on my back window on the ranger and 5% sides and 2.5% strip on the windsheild. never got hasseld. i always cracked my windows if i saw a cop to let some light in. btw at night how could he tell your tint wasnt legal. 45% looks black as shit at night...or in the rain. prolly a safe bet to let the winders down some if u see the law. i did that for about 5 yrs. and gsp is notorious for giving out tint tickets

ended up taking mine off anyways though i ran my truck down the side of a pole at night in the rain because i couldnt see out the side window

So um, where is the rest of the story? How about an update from chadmilliser?

ask for a jury trial. they will throw out the case because they are not going to spend that kind of money just to make a little off you from this ticket

OK I'm really confused... almost all vehicles come with 70% from factory... My 84 ranger has 70% stock its just what the window is. if they put anything on the window then its definately not 70% anymore which is illegal. Sounds like the shop took you for a ride...

Yep. With 70% factory tint, just adding a 50% tint over that will make it a 35% VLT tint. Thou a 50% VLT or higher barely provides any sunlight blockage.

Usually, if the windows are factory tinted, there will be a label indicating it. On my mother's Blazer, the front side windows are labeled 70% VLT. And the rear side windows are called deep solar tint, which look to be a 35% VLT. On my Ranger, the front sides have no factory tint, but the rears have what looks to be 35% VLT factory tint.
