For the last few weeks 4.0 4x4 manual ranger was not starting on the first try. I would hear the starter crank, but not the fuel pump "buzz". Usually by the time I heard the fuel pump, it would fire up and run like a dream.

I went in for a smog test and after the test, it wouldn't start and the garage wanted $1200 for a new fuel pump.

I am curious to see if anyone has had this same issue and if it could be a faulty relay?

If it is the fuel pump, what is involved installing a new pump/filter and if its worth the $$$

$1200 is a insane price to pay for a fuel pump changed

4 or 6 bolts on the bed 3 tiny sheet metal screws holding in the fuel filler neck in. 8 screws holding in the lights. And remove bed. Time ... maybe 20 minutes maybe!. And you have access to the top of the fuel tank. While I havn't pulled my fuel pump out it looks like a big ring you unscrew and the whole assembly should pull right out. time maybe another 20 minutes if you are unlucky with fuel line.

In any case with the bed off you can find out rather fast if the fuel pump is getting power with a voltmeter and the ignition on. if you are getting power at the pump and its not starting then its probably the pump. If you arn't getting power at the pump while trying to start it, go look at the fuel pump relay next.

Yep, I have this problem from time to time, My relay will shake loose and it won't start up.
Just pop the hood, Look at your relays, (the second one is my fuel pump relay) pull it out, put it back in, Usually you'll hear the buzz and there ya go.

One other thing to check is the inertia switch. it is under the dash on the passenger side, on the floor boards. (or close to that area.) check for year of truck. also there is an emergency plug under the drivers seat that is suposed to kill gas pump. (or so I am aware of) haven't ever looked into it fully. I drive 91 & 92 and both trucks have this connection under the seat.

Could be a weak relay as well. Have you changed your fuel filter every 10k? Filter 9 bucks, relay about 7. Give them a shot 1st.
