I just used some marking compound to check the ring and pinion in the new (to me) axles I got. The contact pattern looks great, so I'm about to get started putting them in. After the marking compound got around to the pinion, its now made its way all over the inside of the pumpkin....Do i need to spend some time cleaning all that grease off, or is it safe to leave inside the assembly?

thanks for any help.

If it is not a grainy texture type of material I would not worry about it.

OK, so its not all over the inside of the pumpkin, but it got on the pinion, then transfered over to a lot of the ring gear....its not caked on, more of a little residue spread over the teeth of the ring gear....but i know if its getting on the ring gear its on the pinion too, which i cant really get to to clean very easily....I was hoping a little brake cleaner and a rag would get the majority off, but i wanted to be sure if theres a little bit left on the gears that it wasnt gonna mess anything up.

It's fine.

Though if you did cake it on your backlash reading would be off a few thousandths.
