I have a 99 Ranger 3.0 V6 4wd AT. Recently purchased purchased some manual locking hubs. Ive had them on there for about 2 weeks. They work great. I had to lock them in this morn, i got out the truck to free the hubs, but while i was stopping the truck to disengage i heard a high pitch screech coming from what sounded like the front end as applied the brakes. Got out the truck, freed the hubs, and tried to replay the scenario as it had just happened. But no high pitched noise. Instead i heard kinda like a creaking sound. Now as apply the brakes i hear that same noise just about every single time, as well as occasionaly when i slowly accelerate. Any ideas on either noise? are they possibly related? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Could be loose caliper.

What research i have done seems to point in that direction too, but do you think its responsible for both noises?

okay, looked at the caliper and it looks plum fine...after i put the tires back on, drove it around the yard and i didnt hear any of the noises i heard this mornin...

Sorry about your problems but what do you have to do to switch to manual hubs from electric 4 wheel drive? Thanks!:icon_confused:

My electric 4wd went out due to a vacuum, i was exploring possibilities and i decided to convert to the manual locking hubs. The only thing you do not need to do this, is your vacuum. All i did is order the manual hubs and when they came in, took the existing hubs that pulled from a vacuum, off, clean out around where my automatic hubs were at to rid of any excess dirt, grease, etc....Make sure you replace the o-ring and pop the manual hubs on! And its best to plug that vaccuum hose off, it is not needed.

Some guy told my son whoes truck this that you had to cut hole in floor of truck and add a floor shifter.:icon_confused:

idk about all that....the switch couldnt have been any easier, and like i said the 4wd works great. Id try what i did, if you want, i just aint never heard of that. maybe it works tho!

Not so, sir! Only the hubs will be manual. The transfer case will still operate with the switch on the dashboard. Also, with the manual hubs you can (in the off chance you need to) operate in 2wd low by switching to low range but not locking your hubs in.

Please don't cut a hole in the floor of your truck to do a manual hub swap.

May have just got some debris up in the brakes while in 4x4 mode. As it gets pushed around the backing plate it can make some scary noises, but once it's gone, the noise will be too.

I was thinking the same thing, i do tend to get in some bad stuff tho...but that might be why i havent heard it anymore. Hopefully i wont ever hear it again! Thanks
