noise problem

What could be the problem when there is a rattling and sometimes a whine coming from the front of a 93 4.0 4x4 transmission?

On mine the rattling was a plugged up cat. The whine is normal in 5th gear if thats where you hear it....

is this a constant rattle? in what gears? and at what RPMs? on a standard, if the engine is being lugged momentarily (low RPMs, SHifting to early) then a rattling sound is normal.

I also hear a rattling, only at around 2000 rpm, only when im driving in gear with clutch engaged. I cant just spin it in neutral and hear the rattle. I guess it has to have a load to hear the rattle. im going to investigate my cat.

the rattle is constant, the whine comes and goes in any gear and in neutral
