Took the housing off to change thermostat and found no thermostat went to put one in and there is no recess for a thermostat tried to put one in and broke housing doing it help what do I do
The thermostat is in the lower hose and they are a pain in the ass. If you are real careful pull the three bolts out and hope the rear bypass hose fitting dont break loose. It is easier to remove the lower radiator hose first so your not fighting it putting it back together. Clean the gasket surfaces good on both the housing and the engine. Dry it good and put a little permatex on the thermostat to hold it in along with the O ring then you can line the housing and gasket up and carefully put the bolts in and snug it down good slowly. the rear housing is where the bolts thread and if you break it loose you will nedd to replace that gasket also and then sandwich everything all together and hope it dont leak. I would fill it with straight water first and pressurize the system and check for leaks before draining it again and adding the coolant. To get the bubbles out of the system I found the best way to fill it is with a tee in the heater core hose (flush kit) that goes to the upper radiator hose fitting on the manifold fill it slowly with that fitting to fill the heater core and bypass system once it starts putting out heat you have it pretty much bled off. Some of the B-IIs with A/C had the thermostat housing on the intake manifold if you can find one it is the best way to go. Then you just put the lower part together without the thermostat and refit the bypass and get a different upper hose. http://s984.beta.photobucket.com/user/kimcrwbr1/media/powervalve001.jpg.html?sort=3&o=27 Yuo can kinna see it on the right side of the pic
Yeah don't remind me about that dumb thermostat location on the 2.8L engines LOL. If you took off the top hose connection and didn't find a thermostat don't be alarmed, the thermostat don't go there LOL. Its in the bottom tucked up behind all the belts, hoses and pulleys so that you have to be quadruple jointed to get to it.
I had several issues with thermostats in my 84 ranger, so I got really good at taking them out, if you have small hands its not too bad, just have to either work around the belts or take them off.
What did you break? I just went through water pumping my 85 and it is a nightmare...
If you can avoid taking that lower housing off, then avoid it.
If you broke the top housing, you'll need to find a local salvage yard, maybe online - rockauto - or call them.
The guy at Autozone told me the upper thermostat housing piece that I was looking for was called a water neck back in the day, but they don't carry them.
Take a pic of what you broke - these guys on here really helped me out!
Wow...this is the "water neck" part I needed...wouldn't this part work even though it says that it is not for my vehicle to connect to the upper thermostat housing (I had to drill through the broken bolt and then I bolted the 2 together but would much rather just have 2 new pieces).
I would call the piece that is bolted down to the motor the thermostat housing - what is it's real name? Kimcrwb1 - you are the guru on these...thank you for your help...
Cstrong - show us a pic or if you need to send a pic and we can post it for you. these guys are worth their weight in gold because of their knowledge.
