No Start when cold

Are the injectors firing for sure when there is a no start. A Noid light could be your friend in this case.
I have a truck that did the same thing. I had a bad connector that when it hit 25 degrees it would open up and shut off power to the fuel pump. cleaned and tighten up the connector and all was good.

I think its a sensor or computer now. Now its starting but only if I touch the gas pedal after about 15 sec of cranking or if I jump the ground on the test plug to make the fuel pump run constantly before start. yes the pump is running when I cycle the key for about two seconds.

Thanks for everyones help. changed the pump in the tank and that did the trick. Now I'm changing all the u joints in the front and hubs and will be ready for winter.

Dead Again

Well I thought we had it fixed. Thanks for all the input. This morning its 4 degrees and not start no way no how. the Battery was good turns over fine. No bang. not even with starting fluid now. :buttkick:. Got out and tried the BKO started right up no problem. Anybody want a real cold natured truck. Needs a beach likes swim suits.

hey i'm having fuel pump demons on my truck, how do you do this? i searched in my haynes manual but can't find anything? I'm trying to figure out if my pump is getting power, this could help me (sorry to jack)

Look at your Diagnostic Connector so that there is 4 electrical connections across the bottom and two on top. the rt side should be shorter than the left as you look at it. the far rt position is a test port for the fuel pump and is spliced into the harness between the fuel pump relay and the pump itself. you can test here for pwr to see if the relay is working or you can jump 12v + here to manually run the pump. Do not drive like this as the pump will not turn off if you have an crash. I hope this helps.

Same problem - temperature not an issue. Turned out to be the ignition switch in the steering column. So, I bought a $60 switch from Ford and it was dead in the box. Solution - rewire the run circuit to a second ignition switch. You turn on the column mounted switch to unlock the steering column and allow current to the second swithc. Turn the second starter switch (mounted on the dash) and pow, it starts. Good for now, I will have to come up with another way, but it gets me to work.

I am having a problem like this too. If I walk outside in the morning and see frost, I know it will be a PITA to start. Most of the time I have to cycle the key ON and OFF about 10 times before she will fireup. On the about the 7th cycle of the key I can start to hear the fuel pump, but not sooner. I figured the cold was slowing the action on the relay, so I put in a new fuel pump relay, but it didnt help. I have an entire CARTER fuel pump and sending unit assembly....waiting to go in. If that dont work I will check the inertia switch.

I had a weird issue like this and I traced it back to the ecu relay.

Reviving a dead post with a good news update. Went back to work on the Ranger with a fresh tude. started pulling parts and bench checking them. I found the Starter was truning the motor but drawing 158 amps no load and 342 amps while turning the engine. It was droping my voltage down to 9.2 volts during cranking. R2 starter and wallaaaaaa. Back on the road again.

Just Wondering

I am just wondering if you still consider your truck still "fixed" with the new starter. I am having the exact same issues with my truck. This AM it was 17 deg and she just cranks like there is no tomorrow.

I took a chance and installed a new stater. After all it sounded just like your truck!! And it does crank over much faster when I hit the key but it did not change anything. If it below 20 deg, it just cranks. One interesting point of note, when this happens to me at work I get it pushed inside the heated shop and let it set about 5 to 10 min (or less) everything under the hood dripping wet with condensation, and it will start up:dunno: run rough for a few seconds and your good to go! Makes me think something with the temperature of the air but I am totally at a loss and running out of $$ ANY idea are welcome.
