Drove my 1997 Ranger to the parts store. Parked and went in. Came out and turned the key and nothing happended. In addition the warning lights (Check engine, and others) stay on when the key is turned off. Checked the codes and found nothing. Truck is in the garage with the battery cables off.

Anyone have something like this happen? Suggestions?

You sure your battery isn't just plain dead or maybe the start took a crap ? From working on computers I learned to ALWAYS check the obvious and basic things first because if you cannot get your computer to turn on the first thing is to make sure it is plugged.. Not being an ass but I would check the basics first and then dig deeper. Your description does seem pretty basic, try to jump start it and see if that will work and if not then work from there.

i had this exact problem. i was afraid it was my starter. nope. a cell went out of the battery. (factory battery lasted 9 years!). but thats all it was, turned the key and there was no click no fire nothin. tried to jump but no help. all the lights worked but the batt just physically couldnt hold enuff to crank it. take ur battery to advane or someplace and theyll test it 4 free. i bet ya $20 its ur batt lol

No Start Problem

Gents,

The battery was checked and is OK.

One thing that mystifies me is that the warning lights (start engine, etc.) remain on when the key is in the off position. I requested the wiring diagrams from Alldata Diy and they show the warning signals come from the PCM. They advised me there is no diagnostic proceedures for the PCM and they could not help me.

I purchased this truck new in 1997 and it has received normal maintenance. It has not been dogged or abused. I would like to keep it for another 12 years if possible.

Answer to no start problem

I finally had to have the Ranger taken to the shop today.

I spoke with the tech that worked on it. It has actuator assembly, made out of plastic, that is in the steering column. It is in two pieces, connected by a metal link. When I asked the tech how he got to it, he replied that he had to remove the steering wheel and take of the top of the steering column.

So if you have a no start problem on a 1997 ranger and the warning lights are lite when the key is off the problem might be the rod. Someone told me that other years use a metal rod on the right side of the steering column.
