1996 Ford Ranger 2.3 4 cyl manual

I just bought it without the Speedometer, Odo or Cruise working

I replaced the Speed Sensor on Rear end and tranny

Checked the fuses

Also Horn doesn't work

1996 had speedo cables, they aren't electronic. Check the back of the dash and on the transfer case for the cable and see if it snapped in 1/2. Easiest way to check would be the cable that goes to the transfer case. Pull it off and spin it with a drill and have someone watch your speedo, if it moves your cable is good, if not you know your problem.

Rangers had speedo cables until 1994, in 1995 they got new EEC-V computer and electronic speedometer, no cable.

So 1996 had no cable BUT.............it still used the speedometer cable gear to spin the shaft that VSS sensor reads for speed pulses.

In 1998 this sensor was lost and rear axle VSS, originally only for ABS system, was used for ABS and speed/odo, cruise and computer.

If you don't have speedo, odo, or cruise then there is a problem with the transmission sensor/speedo gear setup or the wiring coming from that sensor to the cab

Well I replaced the unit on the Tranny and the rear end..... then one day it started working first thing in the morning.... went 1.7 miles and boom stopped.... then nothing all day..... then next morning 1.7 miles again and stopped.... so now for 2 weeks every time I drive for the first time that day it goes for 1.7 miles....

I am thinking its something in the gauges....

In 1996 Rear axle sensor has nothing to do with speedo, odo or Cruise, so ignore that one for this problem.

Transmission sensor runs speedo, odo and Cruise, it's signal also goes to the computer.

Speedo and odo share the pulses from VSS, so if speedo stops then odo will as well.
Did you try cruise after the 1.7 miles?

Also if VSS is not working the CEL(check engine light) should come on an Code P0500(Vehicle Speed Sensor malfunction) would be set by the computer.
