I bought a 87 ranger with the 2.9 motor it has been setting for a while. I drove it about 60 miles started running like crap so i thought the module on the dist. was getting hot. I replaced it and still ran like crap i noticed the high pressure fuel pump was getting loud when i warmed up so i replaced that runs great until you start pulling a long hill when you step on the gas she bogs out. I noticed there is a small black box on the ds of the intake that has wires and a vac. line that runs to the egr valve. And there is another port on the egr valve with no vac. line hooked to it. Is this the problem or is it something else?

try dry-gas in the tank, could have water in it? or clogged cat? somethings to check when a truck sits for a while, or is older.

I will give that a try! I just ran to the parts store and put some in. When i was going up there i was running about 30-40 and punched in to it. And it just made a bogging sound from the intake, i let up and punched it again then it took off?

With these 2.9 engines, one of the FIRST things to look over when you have problems is the vacuum lines. It sound like the line that runs to the EGR is disconnected or missing. Unless it has been plugged at the other end, you likely have a serious (but easy to fix) vacuum leak that could easily be causing the loss of power.

Use the vacuum line/emissions routing diagram under the hood to trace and check all of your vacuum lines. Also, check the PCV valve on the passenger side to see if is leaking and/or functioning properly. Might be a good idea (~$5 and 5 minutes) to replace this valve anyways.

You also might want to check to see that the EGR pipe itself is not corroded and/or leaking exhaust, as this can cause similar symptoms.

I would only start buying and replacing things AFTER a thorough check of all the vacuum/emission system lines.

pull codes, there is no check engine light on 87 rangers so you could have codes and not know it.

The tube from the exhaust manf. to the egr valve has been plugged on both ends. I connected the vac. line back up. If all else fells i went to my cousin's junk yard and when i pulled up he was just unloading a 2wd with a 2.9 i took every sensor off of it even the fuel injectors. I will also check the codes. And yes i did change the fuel filter the one before the fuel pump i pulled apart and orielly's said they did not have a replacement one so i cleaned it up and put it back in. I also noticed the coil had some oil around it so i also got a used one to throw on it. Thanks for all the help guys! If it keeps up i will do what i did to my 85 bronco 2, 302 it:icon_thumby:

I figured out the issue. Kept changing parts and found the fuel filter plugged with rusty crap. Took off the gas tank and to no suprise it was full of rust. Replaced the tank and runs like a new truck. Thanks for all the help!!
