No spark

NEED HELP!!!!
Chasing a no spark issue. If i pull the spout connector it will fire but nothing when i plug the connector back in. I had a lifetime dizzy and module so i replaced those but still same problem. Years ago the truck died on me while i was driving so i towed it to a shop and them diagnose it. The guy pulled the spout connector so i could drive it and told me to replace the dizzy because the pick coil went bad. That fixed the problem.

He also told me that pulling the spout connector puts it in a limp mode and was just wondering if anyone knew more about what it does besides for timing?
 
Someone's gotta know something out there!?!?! Im thinking it could be my computer??
 
I've never personally had that happen to me, but the pickup coils are easy to replace once you know how to disassemble your distributor.


I say do it. You'll learn how to strip a distributor pretty well.
 
i just replaced the whole distributor so i has a new pick up coil!!
 
It has to be something in the computer or TFI. All pulling the SPOUT connector does is break the circuit that lets the computer advance or retard the timing and locks the timing at it's mechanical base setting so it can be adjusted.
 
Thats why i was thinking my computer is going bad TFI is new also i wish i could test it to be sure!!
 
You can remove the TFI and have most auto parts stores test it. It comes off with a neato little tool they also sell for the module screws. You'll need some diaelectric grease (sorry my spelling sucks to night) For the reinstall for heat sink between the TFI and the body of the disty. Considering this problem happens at all times, unless the SPOUT is removed? The test should be of help. (Normally it fails when hot and works when cold...thermo fail. But sense yours is doing it all the time? It should help)

Heat sink compound and dielectric grease have different purposes. Get heat sink compound. It's a white paste, while dielectric grease is like non hardening silicone, meant to keep water out of electrical connectors.

Btw, I was assuming the TFI had already been checked. Those are the most prone to failing in this system.
 
Yeah the TFI and the distributor are brand new with new heat sink compound. I noticed when i was playing with it the other night when the spout connector is plugged in i get a spark here and there (im checking spark off the coil wire going to the distributor with a spark plug in the end of it). its almost like if i crank it and dont ground the plug it builds enough energy to spark once when its grounded.
 
Honestly, to me it sounds like there is another ground in your system that shouldn't be there.

The ignition coil is grounded through the spark plug when the circuit is closed by the pickup coil in the distributor/ignition module.
 
Or it`s missing a ground or the computer relay is bad clean all the connectors with electrical cleaner and look for bad wires or pins. Sand all the grounds metal to metal. Give everything a good once over before replacing any more parts.
 
Dont think i have any extra grounds!! Could be missing one tho!! I going to clean and check all connections and grounds tonite!! Ill check the relay out also!! Fingers crossed she runs tonite!!
 
So it turned out to be the eec relay!! replaced it and we got spark!!
 
Nice. Now it's just one more thing to always make sure you check before moving onto a more difficult step.
