No Shift Past 2nd

1991 Ranger 2.9 4x4 A4LD. This truck ran great with no issues what so ever except the fact that it engaged in drive or rev rather harsh. My step sons truck and he broke the crank, truck sat for about a year and the engine was replaced but now won't upshift past 2nd. When they replaced the engine they only pulled the engine, any clues where to start or did sitting for so long kill it?

my friends '93 did that same thing.......then it died 2 months later....start shopping for a tranny and get rid of that shotty A4LD ASAP

Check the vacuum line going to modulator to be sure its hooked up
