No reverse

Hi guys,
I have a 98 ranger 4x4. It has a 5r55e.
I have no reverse when I shift the selector from park or drive the truck
Feels like it has gone into a gear but nothing when I hit the gas.
Also in 4hi same thing but in 4lo reverse will pull.
My trans was rebuilt about 40k ago.
Is there something in the transfer case that could cause this?

To me that sounds like MAJOR slippage in the transmission. It's still catching but not enough to get the truck rolling without being in low range.

You do still have all forward gears correct?

Does the transmission have engine braking in manual 1? If not the low reverse band is broke.

All forward gears work good. I'll try engine brake on my way to work.
If it does need a new tranny I found one on a 98 4.0 explorer with 130k.
They are asking 300 for it. Will that bolt up? And if so, is it worth it?

Ok I just tried engine breaking in manual 1st and that works too. No problem there.
