No Power + engine surge

Get your coil packs tested, Mine did same thing when it hit around 150xxx miles. Turns out the coil packs were bad. Summit sells Accel coil packs that fit a 2.3 Ranger for a reasonable price. Might also check airfilter if you havnt recently.

PlumCrazy, where did you test the coil packs. I have called every Advance Auto and Autozone within an hour drive and none test coils. They test ignition control modules.

plum crazy where did you bring them to get them tested? don't they normally just go out? i guess what i'm saying is isn't more of a one day it works fine and the next nothing rather than a slow deteriorating performance thing?

I didn't have mine tested professionally, I just held the plug wire a little bit away from the coil pack to see if it arced or not. There was atleast one dead wire on both coil packs, so I replaced them and it solved the problem. But I am pretty sure that my local Advance Auto can test them. I can ask a buddy of mine that works there if he knows where else you can get them tested.

hey man i had that problem with my ranger also, ill tell you it skipped a tooth,
no ifs and or buts but be glad its a non interferent head.
retime that truck and it should be fine, i actually advanced it one tooth on mine so 5th gear isnt laggy much but i gotta run 89 or 93 or it dont run good but i wouldnt recomend it, thats all up to you if you advance it.

i usuall run 89 octane, the local gas station sells it for same price as 87, my question is if advancing the valve timing will affect gas miliage at all?
