Once again I am in need of some thoughts. I had purchased a 2.9 short block and am rebuilding. all parts are new. new felpro gaskets, new melling oil pump and shaft, new speed pro rockers, lifters and pushrods. I used nothing old.. but the tins.
I was doing a preoil on the engine stand, could not get any oil to run to the valve train.. and ran it a good 4 minutes.. with a drill. I pulled the oil filter and it seemed to squirt out the top. Unusual I thought. but it did fill the filter. I know i have the rocker assmbly the same way it was before ie the holes in the same direction. now, it worries me there was pressure on the oil filter when i spun it loose. we have about 3 quarts of 20-50 racing oil in the unit. Is that enough and we dont have that stupid level plug in the side of the oil pan.. but it is covered with tape..you think that is enough to build a pressure.. should I worry about this or bolt it in and then try spinning it again cause... man i dont wont to yank it in and out if necessary.. I was using a piece of tubing stuffed over the shaft of the oil pump with a 1/4 in extension in a drill.

Or should I yank the heads off. they are NEW world product heads I dont now which way to head so ideas are appreciated.

I'd try it without the rockers in place.....if no oil comes out the passage that fills the rocker shafts, I'd suspect the cam bearings, which are considered to be a weak point of the 2.9

If oil doesn't come out those passages, I'd be ticked at the place that "rebuilt" it.

Shouldn't matter.....did you try spinning either direction??

up on front, driversde corner, where the oil sending unit is....there should be a small set screw plug ....pretty sure that is a oil passage...if you can remove that and if oil come out there then you have other plugged passages.

Look at it now....better find this now, then later. when more catistrophic things can be found.

Next step

Well I am going to try pulling the rockers off first.. this am. Not going to work on it all day..my new saying is there it nothing that time and money can't fix on this ranger...and I got more time than money right now..

IMenriched.. Iknow about them big green machines.. I grew up across the street literly from their plant, My younger brother was a designer for the first round tractor cab's and he did some design on some transmissions. Now he is a plant engineer in WI in Horicon.. I live in MN. but still have the homestead in Waterloo..

Yeah I have spun it both ways. I even dropped the pan again to make sure the shaft was in there correctly.. very troubling

if you can't get any thing to the top and the lower gallies have oil they probably did put in a cam bearing wrong.the top end gets its oil from there

Well as it turns out. I was not engaging the pump shaft completely so after running around town all morning looking for a tool.. I sacrficed the distributor stuck a new drill my 30 year old 3/8 did not have enough muscle.. any way we were able to pump all kind of oil put the rockers back on and spend the rest of the day trying to get the slave clutch line out. man i love saws-alls.. so got the new slave in and ready to drop in the engine but we called it a day.. and finish off the day wiht some pork we had been smoking for about 10 hours... yummy.. Thanks Iwas ready to throw that thing in the missssiippi..
