Hi I'm Ron...I did a oil change on my 2001 Ford Ranger 4x4 4.0 SOHC engine my oil pressure gauge has been acting funky for about six months( crank it up cold and gauge would show no pressure till warm then function normally...when I crank it you could hear the bearings rattle a little till the pump built pressure then quite downafter a few seconds ,so I know the pump was working...now the gauge is not working and I can hear more rattling noise in the engine but I've drove for about fifty miles back and forth to work...I put 10w-40 oil in it last change and I'm at my wits end ....didn't have any serious problems till i DID THE LAST OIL CHANGE....any Ideas would be appreciated thanks ....Ron

Sludge could have just loosened up and clogged up the pick up screen.
Oil pump could be on its way out. You may have gotten a faulty oil filter.

running 10w-40 probably wouldn't cause too much of a problem but that engine if i'm not mistaken is made for 5w-30 or 5w20... Check the oil pressure sending unit maybe?

They had oil pressure switch problems for a couple of years that do exactly what you describe. Replace the switch and your problem will go away. They may call it a sender at the parts counter but it's really just a switch.
