My 1987 ranger 2.9 5speed will crank all day with no start. When I spray starting fluid it fires right up but dies as soon as I stop spraying. I pulled the upper hose off of the regulator to see if any fuel was getting to it but I'm pretty sure i pulled the return line off. So I'm down to either a new regulator or pump but I can here the pump spinning under the drivers door but idt it's getting any fuel

I am going through this right now myself.Mine was no screen on the tank fuel pump and the pump packed with junk.If you want to see if your getting gas unscrew the schrader valve or valve stem on the fuel rail. Then put a piece of hose over the stem I used a radiator overflow hose. Then you put a clear bottle on the end of the hose and turn the key. That way you can tell if you have water problems or not getting fuel. There are 2 pumps on mine the in tank is louder maybe you could feel the one under the driver seat it needs to work too.Don't forget the fuel filters but i've never seen one quite completely on a fuel filter though.

or you could just push the pin on the schrader valve with a pen, and see if fuel spits out... there is a pin out on the diagnostic port that if you cross with a paper clip, will turn the fuel pumps on, but i forget which ones they are

no fuel

I have the same problem with my 88 2.9. I jumped the fuel pump lead in the VIP connection block, with key ON, fuel pressure shows 40 PSI but the injectors don't "fire" or open when cranking. It runs if I squirt gas in the intake, but only until that runs out. I'm told there's always power to the injectors and they fire by grounding them through the control module. This truck has been sitting for some time and I think some ground connections and rust may be the culprit.
