well we put new fuel pump in the tank and reattached everything. when we turn the key on both pumps turn on. so then we hooked the gauge to the top of the engine, and turned the key on again and no fuel pressure to the engine. do you think the fuel filter is clogged or shoudl we prime the engine to help it get a boost.

you have air in the lines from replacing the pump, but you should still get SOME pressure at the rail.

a clogged fuel filter isnt going to completely block the fuel. again, you should still get some pressure at the rail. but if the filter is in question, it should be replaced anyway. they are cheap.

have you tried to start it yet?

its possible you have a bad fuel pressure regulator.

regulator

yea we replaced the regulator tonight and we are getting great pressure, now the truck wants to start but back fired on us so we are thinking that maybe some of the fuel injectors are clogged. is there a way of cleaning them, or what other cars would have the same kind of engine that i could go to a junk yard and get.

more often than not, fuel injectors are not the problem. i really dont see them causing a backfire. have you checked your base timing? what engine is this anyway?

Have you replaced the filter? The parts store here won't warranty the pumps unless you have a reciept for a fuel filter at the same time. If the engine is "sneezing" in the intake that is lack of fuel. Raw fuel in the exhaust could cause a backfire. Otherwise backfires are related to ignition problems.
Don't worry about the canister filter, There is a laser welder type filter a little ways toward the motor from the pressure pump. It may be hidden by it's mounting bracket.
If the canister does have a filter in it and it is plugged, That is a whole new problem. Usually they don't have filters in them though.

we are getting fuel pressure all the way up to the regulator. so te canister won't have PROBLEM

As Wicked said, The filter can be plugged and you will still get pressure. Fuel pressure is only half of what you need. You also need flow. You could have 100 lbs of pressure and it still won't run if you don't have flow.
I have personally fixed many no starts by simply replacing the filter. And they did have pressure.
You still haven't answered whether you changed the filter.
