I don't get it. I spent 2-3 hours reading and I don't think I read one post with the same issue.

94 ranger was running "fine". Failed emissions due to cracked fuel filler neck. Replaced it. Truck ran. Then I got the bright idea that I might as well change the fuel filter. Put a nice new healthy one in there. Got the filter off fairly easy, guess I got lucky there. Clips weren't too bad. Put new filter on, and yes I put it on the right way. Drove for a little and now truck no run.:dunno:

Pump turns on with ignition. Checked inertia switch. No pressure at valve on fuel rail. Tried turning on and off at least 20 times. Sprayed starter fluid into intake and it fires up for a few seconds then dies. Truck has at least 5-6 gallons in it. Maybe more like 10.

I forgot. When it first wouldn't start, I thought it was weird because gauge read 1/4 tank. Tried putting more gas in thinking maybe float was bad. Shortly after I started putting gas in, it started overflowing out the filler neck. Weird. I thought something with new filler neck. When I squeezed the filler neck towards the bottom, I could hear the gas starting to flow down as I squeezed. I thought something weird like somebody put some shit in my tank or something, but now seeing no pressure at the rail it kinda makes sense.

But why?? Any thoughts?:bawling:

Gonna pull the fuel filter off in the morning and go from there.

Bad filter I would say.

Please tell me you didnt put a paper towels or rag in the tank neck while changing the filler neck and forgot to take it out

Didn't put anything in the tank neck. Basically put the hose on right after I pulled the other off.

I would pull the filler hose again and see if you can find what is/was blocking the entrance to tank, could it be a piece of old filler hose?

When you to went to put more fuel in the tank did you hear the "whoosh" of pressure equalization when you removed the gas cap?

Yes you could have gotten a blocked filter, it happens, not very often but it does happen.

No woosh. I am going to get a pressure tester now. Gas is coming out of the fuel filter. I switched key on with the hose off the filter and gas came out, so I fuel pump is working. Don't know if it's good enough though. Even after turning ignition on and off 20-30 times, when I push the Schrader valve, I get nothing.

Fuel pressure regulator? Thought I read those almost never go bad. Gonna check the pressure coming out of the filter. Anyone know the pressure that should be coming out the fuel pump or filter?

It's not the fuel pressure regulator. The regulator is after the filter and is highly unlikely to stick open and not produce any pressure.

You shouldn't have a lot of pressure out of the filter or pump. Pumps don't make pressure, pumps make flow. Flow+restriction= pressure. The pressure regulator is the restriction.

Did you put the filter in backwards?

No. Round part facing tank. Flow arrow pointing towards engine.

So, if the fuel pump kicks on and fuel is coming out of the filter, but there is no pressure at rail...and it ran before....either a clogged line after the filter or pump is bad and it just happened to do this after a filter change? Or something fell in the tank after I changed the filler hose? I'll look in there. Have an extra low mileage pump and unit, might just throw that in.

If you have flow out of filter then fuel pump screen isn't clogged up.

You can unscrew the fuel line at the rail(it is connected to FPR), and you should get same flow as you did from filter, as adsm8 said it is not pressure but flow you will see.

If limited or no flow then disconnect fuel filter again and blow out that line.

I assume you pulled the line immediately after the filter and turned the key to see if it was flowing.

After that you checked if there was pressure in the rails and found none?

I feel like this is a question I should not have to ask, but I am going to.

Did you prime the system after replacing the filter and before starting the engine?

The only priming I read about was turning the ignition on and off a bunch. That I did a bunch of. Also sprayed starter fluid in the intake and started.

Just hooked a pressure gauge to the valve on fuel line by fpr. Absolutely nothing. Sprayed some more fluid in intake, few sputters that's it. Checked vacuum line from fpr, dry no gas. Can't find the other end of the line from the filter to try and blow it out.

Found it. Totally inaccessible. Looks like the line from the filter runs under the intake into the back of the rail? Would have to take the intake off. I can't believe that's the only way to blow out that line if it's clogged.

There are two lines connected to Fuel rail.
Line from fuel filter and line to tank(return line), both are compression fittings so you just need a wrench no special tool

So I have to take off the upper intake and replace the gasket just blow out the fuel supply line? If that's even the prob. Don't know what else could be.
