NO EGR casting on intake

so, any body have an idea as to what year this 2.3 might be? The intake is the later style truck injection manifold, but, other than that, the only thing that I can offer is that the part number starts with E8. Oh, and the exhaust mani has what looks like a factory installed Allenhead plug in the spot where the EGR tube would go.

E8 is 88. Some Ranger 2.3's had a plug where the smog pump air would be injected, but had no pump nor plumbing. I have an '85 with no smog pump, and the EGR has a tube that goes behind the engine to the intake side. It feeds into the upper intake, just after the throttle plate. There is one plug in the exhaust with a hex head, smallish, and between cylinder 3 & 4.

some '89 and '90 auto 2.3's didn't come with EGR for whatever reason

Now, that you mention it, this engine DID have an A4 hanging behind it. Hmm.
