Hi,
Newbie to the forum. Just bought a 1990 Ranger. Nice shape except I cannot get
the directionals or windshield wipers to work.

Scenario..
Emergency flashers work. No left/right directionals, no windshield wipers.
All fuses are ok. I replaced the switch assembly on the steering column with no
success! This appears to be a wiring problem.

Has anyone dealt with a similar problem or have a schematic of the wiring harness
associated with wipers/directionals?

The voltage come into and leave the switch into the flasher mechanism somehow.

When I turn on the directionals, the lg/w or w/lb wires are not at 12V.
When I turn on the emergency flashers, they are at 12V. (blinking)

So, when I turn on the directionals, where does the voltage come from?

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

John

addendum:

The windshield wipers are working. It was a bad ground!

The directions still do not work. If anyone has any ideas on this, I would appreciate the assistance..

thanks

hm... i would turn the turn signals on, and hook a volt meter into the light socket to see if you are getting any power.

no voltage at the lights, UNLESS it is the emergency flashers.

The wiring at the switch that goes to the lights does not have voltage.

There is a wire that has voltage (I assume it is voltage into the switch) but when the
directionals are turned on, it does not have voltage. (it goes to 0V) I jumpered from the
voltage in line to the front directionals, and they operate.

This doesn't add up?
o no directionals, except for emergency flashers
this indicates that the wiring from the switch to the light bulbs are ok.
o I can hardwire voltage to the front directionals and they operate.
(I didn't test the rear, as I was unsure which wires)

So, it looks like there is a short where the voltage coming into the switch gets shorted/redirected when the directional is turned on. Seems to indicate a bad switch,
but I replaced it with a junk yard switch. I doubt that the junk yard switch is broken in
an identical manner as the original

Any thoughts on this one?

thanks

John

Did you say that you installed a new switch from a junkyard? if you did, why?

well if you have no voltage comming from the switch itself, that means that the switch is broken. Did you flip the switch either way and test it?

I replaced the switch after looking at all the other possibilities of failure..

According to the Haynes manual, there is only 1 flasher relay. (verified at Autozone) If the emergency flashers work, then the problem isn't the flasher relay. Correct?

What else could it be?

I am at a loss on this one!! :)

thanks

John

There are two flashers, turn and hazard. Remove the fuse panel cover. The flasher on the front of the panel is turn signal. Hazard flasher is on the rear of the panel.

Power to the flasher is from fuse #5, ppl/or wire.

Power from flasher to multifunction switch is lt blu.

Power out of multi-function switch to lights is lt grn/wht for lft front, wht/lt blu for rh front, lt grn/org for L rear, org/lt blu to R rear.:)shady
