NMO Mounts

How do people feel about nmo mounts for a cb antenna? My friend's ranger has one in the roof for an antenna, it's just not installed. I'm thinking of doing the same and wondered if anyone has experience with that.

That's all we use at work. If you can get over the fear of drilling a large hole in the roof of your vehicle, then it seems to work fine. A step drill bit works the best.

NMO is supposed to be the best connector out there for most radio applications now. Drilling a hole in the sheet metal can be quite intimidating. Especially when you are opening up a new hole for water intrusion. Tape over the area you want to drill and use an edge reaming tool to remove the burs. That will protect the paint and make the hole as smooth as possible for sealing it back up with the mount installation. Even if the mount has an O-ring to seal up the hole, I would recommend putting some RTV on the mount and installing it wet so the RTV squeezes out to make sure you have a good seal. You can wipe up the excess after the installation for a clean look.

I'm pretty sure I won't do it myself. I'm still recovering from drilling the holes for my cab visor and that was almost a year ago.

I would consider this myself if it wasn't for the boats and things that get loaded on the roof. Since the roof has to be kept clear, I went with lip mounts on the doors for the 2011, plus a couple others that required drilling and metal work on the fenders.

I have a decklid clamp on one on the ditch light bracket on the Bronco and it works great. It is opposite of the regular radio antenna.

I made my own mounting bracket out of a piece of sheet metal bent into an L shape and attached to my roof rack with a U bolt. Ran the cable through the edge of the rear hatch (this is on an Explorer.) No need to drill holes in the body.
