Well, I scrapped the plan of getting a cheapo beater to fix up. Now I'm looking for a newer truck and wanted people's experiences with the newer automatics. It's hard to find newer trucks with manuals and that has got me wanting to try an automatic. Anybody have good experience with the new autos? I know the old A4LD's were kind of junk and we used to have one. So what do you guys think? Should I get an automatic and will I be disappointed? I really like driving manuals that's why I'm kind of stuck on this and asking for opinions.

It's better. It's still and autotragic though. The 5R is pretty good. Same basic design, just stronger.

Ya my tranny has been grinding since about 205k, I'm still alive at 217k lol.
I doubt it's the original but it's good.

I've never had any trouble with the 4R44E automatic in my truck, which is nearing 140k. If it ever dies though, I'll probably replace it with a 5 speed.

Ya, I have to be easy from 1st-2nd, after that it's fine.

171k on my dogamatic. Still the original and done way more towing than most on here would believe.

the a4ld evolved to what resides in v8 mustangs

You should know those trannies are made in France. All of them. The Ranger tranny started life in '73 as a Pinto automatic. How good could it be?

New ones are much different and much better. I think anything built after '95 would certainly have all the fixes. It's now a 20+ year old tranny and it's been refined into a decent unit I think. I wouldn't worry about it. The manual M50d certainly has some skeletons in its closet.

In my version of driving, the right hand is for the coffee cup. Only reluctantly do I own a few standard shift vehicles. It's 2011 and things should carry on with a fast-slow switch and a stop switch. Let the car figure out how to get from fast to slow, I don't want to be bothered.

Oh, but that's no fun. You only need that coffee because you have a snooze-o-matic trans.:icon_rofl:

I like mine. I'm confident I can get 200k out of it. The late 90s-early 00s are known for bad valve body gaskets and EPC solenoids. There's a TSB on it. Most problems with the 4Rs and 5Rs can be solved by changing those parts. Regular fluid changes are a must to keep gunk out of the EPC solenoid.

My 02 did really well no problems, fluid stayed clean no peanut butter or chunks in the pan on the first fluid change, and spotless thereafter. Sold it with 118K- but I had it performance programmed since 800 miles and throughout its life. Very little slipping and hooked up tight. Did some trailer pulling too. Whole truck did really well, miss her...
