I have a 92 ranger with almost 500k on it and it constantly misses and back fires and will not reach 55mph. I feel that it has burnt valves cause I changed all ignition parts and exhaust manifolds due to cracks which most likly caused the valves to burn up in the first place.
So today I found a 2.3 engine on a newer ranger that a vin#:
1ftcr10a9ppa21447, will this work in my 92'? The interior look similar to mine and the engine has headers. They want $100 for it at a pick n' pull yard and I'm guessing that it runs because the cab is crushed like it rolled over in an accident.
Thanks in advance!
Herb

you know what year it came out of? anything 89-94 would work great!

Just make sure it had a spot for a Dist, cam sensor or a dummy plug and it will be fine

I'm not sure I understand. My 92 has eight spark plugs and so does this one at the pick n pull. Where would I locate the cam sensor and what should I look for when I find it?

I was thinking that someone could tell what year it is by looking at the vin# 1ftcr10a9ppa21447 the yard people don't know.

Ok I found out that the truck is a 1993 ranger according to decodethis.com. Is a 93 engine going to work in a 92 truck or is it going to be a major operation?

No problem! I have a 92 motor in my 94, and it was cake. Just use all the electronics and accessories from your old motor. And while everything is apart would be a great time to change spark plugs and timing belt. Check waterpump and thermostat. And don't put the oil filter on until you've got the new motor bolted in the truck, it gets in the way.

he has 8, so do I and so does every other 4 cylinder ranger from 89 till about 2001.

Just bought the complete enginge ready to drop in for $100. The only difference is the header on the 93 vs cast iron exhaust manifold on my old 92 engine.

Any thoughts on fitting a factory header on my 92 exhaust system?

should bolt up, a lot of people use them as a bolt on header, they don't give any performance increase over the cast but weigh a lot less... :)

Good deal, I was always worried of having issues of matching up. I also don't have to worry about the notorious manifold cracks either, this is the 2nd manifold that has cracked on me.
